The person you never forgot

Ask anyone over thirty and there is usually one. A boy from a summer job. A woman who helped on the worst day of a bad year. A friend from school whose surname has quietly disappeared.

We don't look for them, mostly, because looking feels impossible. A search engine wants a name. A social network wants a name. All you have is a bus stop in 1997 and a way somebody laughed.

The moment is the identifier

Here is the thing that makes those searches possible: the other person remembers the same moment. Not your face necessarily, not your name — the moment. The specific, ordinary, oddly precise circumstances of it.

So describe the situation before you describe the person. Where you both were. Why you were there. What was happening around you. What time of year it was. Then add the three details you would feel slightly silly writing down, because those are the ones that do the work.

Say why you are looking

One honest line — "I never got to thank you", "I've wondered for twenty years if you were alright" — makes people answer. Keep it free of pressure, and keep your phone number and address out of it. Introductions happen inside the platform, only after both people agree.

Being found is half of it

A memory sitting in public is a lure as much as a search. Local groups pass these stories around; someone who is not the person often recognises them and forwards it on. That is how a surprising number of these end.

It costs nothing to write it down

Posting a memory is free. It takes a few minutes, and after that it simply waits. Sometimes for a week. Sometimes for years. It only takes one person, once, reading the same afternoon from the other side.
