Privacy policy
Nothing about you is revealed without two yeses. This explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.
1. Who we are
noknokk (noknokk.com) is operated by Nuri Hassim in New South Wales, Australia. We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). noknokk is a consent-based reconnection service. It is not a records, tracing, investigative, DNA, surveillance or emergency service.
2. What we collect
Account details: your email address, a display name or alias, and confirmation that you are 16 or older.
What you write: memories, event memories, recognition answers, messages and reports.
Event room activity, only if you choose it: room membership and alias, crew links you and the other person both accepted, location while you share it with that crew, private encounter logs and co-presence notes.
Payments: if you buy Pro, our payment provider processes your card. We receive your plan and status, never your full card number.
Pre-launch interest list: the email address and optional name or message you submit.
Basic technical data needed to run and secure the service, such as sign-in times and error logs.
3. Double-blind by design
Until two people both accept a match, neither sees the other's name, photo, profile or contact details. Phone numbers, email addresses and street addresses are removed from public memories before they are stored.
A private verification question must be answered before any reveal. If someone declines, that pairing is permanently suppressed and nothing about you is revealed.
4. Event rooms
Joining a room is voluntary and limited to that one event. There is no continuous background location tracking.
Location is shared only with crew members where both people have agreed, only while you have the room open, and only inside that room. Switching sharing off deletes your last position immediately.
Live positions and co-presence notes are deleted a short time after the event ends. Event email summaries stop 14 days after the event.
We never sell event data and never share it with festival organisers, advertisers or other third parties. Organisers do not see who attended through noknokk or what anyone logged.
5. Encounter logs ("Drop a pin")
An encounter log is saved on your own device first, so it works without signal, and uploads to your account when you are next online with the room open.
Only you can read your logs. They are never shown to the person described, to other attendees or to organisers. A log is only seen by others in that room if you choose to publish it, and then without your name, photo or profile.
6. Private chats
There are no public or group chats. A chat is always between two people, and opens only after both have accepted and completed verification.
Access rules are enforced inside our database, not just in the app: only the two participants can read or send messages in a conversation, and messages cannot be read or sent before it is unlocked.
Your conversations stay in your Messages so you can come back to them later, until you delete them or your account. Either person can block or report at any time.
Staff only access message content when needed to investigate a safety report or meet a legal obligation.
7. How we use information
To run matching and reveal, operate event rooms, deliver messages and notifications, moderate content for safety, process payments, answer enquiries and keep the service secure.
Automated tools help with matching and moderation. A match is a suggestion, never a verified identification, and you can ask a person to review a moderation decision.
We do not sell personal information and do not use it for third-party advertising.
8. Who we share with
Service providers that host our systems, send email and process payments, under confidentiality and only to run noknokk.
Police or authorities where the law requires it or where there is a serious threat to someone's life, health or safety.
Some providers may store data outside Australia. Where that happens we take reasonable steps so it is protected consistently with the APPs.
9. Security
Data is encrypted in transit, access is controlled by database-level rules on every table, staff tools require verified staff roles checked on the server, and private documents are kept in non-public storage.
No system is perfectly secure. If a data breach is likely to cause serious harm, we will notify affected people and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as required by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.
10. How long we keep it
Account content is kept while your account is active. Deleting a memory removes it from the archive and future matching. Deleting your account removes your profile, memories, logs and messages, except records we must keep for legal, safety or payment reasons.
Event locations and co-presence notes are deleted shortly after each event ends.
11. Your choices and rights
You can ask to access, correct or delete your personal information, switch on a permanent "do not contact me" setting, leave any event room, stop location sharing, and unsubscribe from emails.
Anyone, member or not, can ask for content about them to be removed.
12. Children
noknokk is only for people aged 16 or older. Searches about children are refused, and accounts found to belong to anyone under 16 are removed.
13. Complaints and contact
Contact us through the contact page with any privacy question or complaint. We aim to respond within 30 days. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).
We may update this policy as the service changes, and will announce material changes in the app before they take effect.
